As a Muscle Therapist I’ve been asked a lot of questions all the time about what is the best massage to recover from a workout or from any athletic performance
Of course there is no simple answer to this question because all the massages have to be customized on each client’s body and necessities.
For example if you have just run a marathon your body is already pretty inflamed from the physical exertion, the last thing you want to do is applying more damage ( a strong deep tissue ) to the already tired muscle. So a soft tissue massage with gentle mobilization could be the answer.
But let’s say you have a competition in 3 days and you feel your muscle tight from excessive strength training and conditioning.In this case you might want a deep tissue massage where I work your adhesion and release the knots throughout trigger point therapy. It might hurt a little and increase the inflammation in the next 48 hours but it will speed up the general recovery and get you ready and lit for the competition.
What I’m trying to say is that there is no magic formula to get the perfect massage , the only magic formula is the communication and the understanding between the client and the massage therapist. The more I understand how you feel when I work on your tissue the more I can calibrate my pressure and release the pain in your muscle. It’s a dialogue where we are working together to heal your body and to feel insanely relaxed after it.
